Croatia
- Best time to go
- May, June, Sept, Oct
Croatia stretches from the Pannonian plains around Zagreb to a long Adriatic coast with more than a thousand islands.
It joined the EU in 2013 and has used the euro since 2023. Most visitors come for the coast, but the country also has Roman and Venetian towns, eight national parks and a food and wine culture that changes from region to region.
Things to do
Don't miss in Croatia
- Hop between islands on the coastal ferries and catamarans.
- Walk old towns that grew from Roman and Venetian times, from Split's palace to Dubrovnik's walls.
- Visit the national parks, from the lakes of Plitvice to the waterfalls of Krka.
- Eat by region: truffles and olive oil in Istria, seafood and peka in Dalmatia, štrukli in Zagreb.
Getting there
How to get to Croatia
Croatia has international airports in Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Pula and Rijeka, with many more direct flights in summer. Overnight car ferries cross the Adriatic from Italy, for example Ancona to Split and Bari to Dubrovnik. By road, motorways connect Croatia with Slovenia and Hungary, and since 2023 Croatia is part of the Schengen area, so there are no border checks from other Schengen countries.
